Alcohol Interventions

With alcohol being the most widely abused substance in the country, it is no wonder that more interventions are needed for alcoholism. There are many varying forms of alcohol abuse, though, and one measure from the American Medical Association that has helped is the early intervention alcohol screening test. This is simply where doctors are more aware of their patients' alcohol intake by asking a few simple questions and informing them more about the dangers of alcohol abuse and becoming an alcoholic.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has created a guide for doctors to help patients through the alcohol screening and brief intervention program. Categories include at-risk drinkers who do not appear to abuse alcohol or be dependent on it, as well as those who do abuse it and are exhibiting signs of alcoholism.

When and How to Intervene for Alcohol

For heavy drinkers who are completely out of control and at serious risk of injuring themselves or someone else, a much more thorough form of intervention is recommended. These would include those found on the intervention services and family intervention pages on this site - where a rehabilitation facility is chosen and loved ones are trying to figure out how to get the person to agree to treatment.

People who are that far out of control with their alcohol consumption will be intervened on one way or the other. In otherwords, if they don't stop or cut back their drinking then someone or something else will step in and prevent or at least reduce further destruction. This can include judicial intervention following an arrest for domestic violence, public intoxication, DUI or other crime. It is better for an alcohol abuser to receive treatment than to sit behind bars, in most cases.

Lighter forms of intervention, such as the doctor screening, could simply include addressing the situation with the patient, discussing some goals to reduce the amount and frequency of alcohol consumed as well as to curb or eliminate the associated behaviors. Those individuals who are able to exercise more control will find this form of intervention to be sufficient, otherwise the use of some form of sanctions could be the next step.
