Family Intervention

The most common form of intervention in America is usually referred to as a family intervention. Family interventions can be performed by any one individual or an entire group of members, including other loved ones and associates. This is usually where the addict is brought in and each person has an opportunity to say to him or her how they feel, what they think, how much they love the addict and why they want them to get help. Somtimes this is done via pre-written letters, which is recommended by certain intervention guidelines, though it can also be off-the-cough and just plain heartfelt for that moment.

It is a good thing to remember when performing a family intervention that everyone there is on the same page - meaning they are there to help the person and not for some other reason such as an axe to grind or bone to pick. Having additional people there with intention other than getting that person help can be counter-productive to the family intervention process and possibly make it unsuccessful.

Intervention Tips

Here are a few recommendations regarding family interventions based on many years of experience and countless families helped:

  • Have the treatment center and travel arrangements already planned out in advance so that you can act quickly following the intervention.

  • Elect a leader to essentially be the moderator or coordinator for the family. This should be someone that the person needing help will listen to most.

  • Keep the focus on love and help, rather than blame, shame or punishment, otherwise you will build up even more resistance.

  • Have your boundaries limits, and secondary plans in place and fully agreed on by everyone involved. If you have one person in the group who is going to not stick to the agreements of the rest of the group then he or she could actually ruin the outcome or objective.
